The Love of our Hunting Dog
For years (more than I care to admit), I spent countless hours in the field and sloughs chasing ducks, pheasants, geese, and whatever else I could find to hunt without the most important companion a hunter could ask for…a dog. Hunting without a dog is certainly doable and can be enjoyable however the experience takes on a whole new level of enjoyment and pleasure with a companion. I was fortunate to find such a buddy in June 2022. His name is Brisco (picture below) and my experience with him to this point has been amazing. Having a dog makes the hunting experience so much more rewarding. Before, I would feel frustration and disappointment when walking a field without seeing a bird. Now, not only do I rarely end a walk empty-handed, I get the added bonus of watching him with amazement as he works the field. Instincts are at play, for sure, but I can also see the fruits of my (hours and hours of) training come to pass. When he sees ducks flying overhead, he sits in steel-focus without movement, watching them land on the water. After a few shots ring out, his attention turns to me, waiting for permission to perform his job. I love the energy and excitement in his eyes and the sheer joy he gets when I give him the command to retrieve. For those who haven’t experienced this or know what I’m talking about, I implore you to consider a dog. You won’t find a better field companion or a more trustworthy hunting friend.
